Attack on Titan, the popular TV anime coming back with season 3 in 2018, is having its second crossover with Tokyo JOYPOLIS from 13th July to 1st October.
This well-received crossover launched first in 2015 has returned with an even better event.
The event is available for 23 days, which is every Saturday and Sunday during 15th July – 1st October and the Friday of 10th August. It is launched three times a day at 11:00, 14:00 and 17:30 (GMT +9) respectively. No event is held on 11th – 13th August and 19th – 20th August.
The highlight is the 10-minute original animation starring four characters and the battles with titans.
The event is actually an escape room game. It started off with a movie that explained the game’s background. Levi and Eren set out to reclaim the titan-ridden technopolis – Joypolis, but their plan fails and now they are stuck in the city. The only thing left is a tactics plan.
The task is to solve the mysteries revolving around the plan, kill the titans and save the two soldiers.
Boards that contain puzzles can be found along the journey. It is hard to proceed as a single player. Having some comrades is a must. Hints are given in the plan and on the boards, but they are so subtle that they make people go “what? really?”. It’s better to proceed in a large group. Someone must be clever enough to come up with answer.
Following the puzzles is a battle against a titan. It surely is an exceptional memory made in this Summer holiday.
On the first floor of the facility, there are two life-size statues. They were revealed by Mikasa Ackerman’s voice actress Yui Ishikawa and Even Yeager’s voice actor Yuki Kaji on 13th July.
The new Eren statue was opened next to the Levi statue that was made for the first crossover. Regarding the exquisite details, Kaji said “they are so dynamic that they really look like they are jumping and there is wind blowing from behind. The crazy parts which I have been wanting to see for so long are also included”. He was very excited about Eren being chosen to be the new statue.
Next to the figures is Half Pipe Tokyo, where it offers a thrilling 3DMG-simulation spinning experience. It even has Attack on Titan OST playing in the background.
Ishikawa already tried the 3DMG experience before the opening and even defeated Kaji. The former commented, “Mikasa cannot lose to Eren. And no one can spin that way, but Levi really spins like that”.
It is important to get saline and sugar supply in the hot Summer season. The crossover meals are satisfying. For savoury, I chose Bacon Set Recommended by Sasha. As for sweetness, I chose Colossus Titan Choux Tower.
It was truly hot on the terrace, but I got a pigeon to eat with me. Bacon Set Recommended by Sasha was very salty while Colossus Titan Choux Tower offered a mild sweetness and a slight sourness coming from the berries. The cool cream made my weariness go away. Kaji said the food was easy to share and something that many people would ask for.
After I finished getting my supplies, I went straight to get original merch. The life-size panels were 28,000 yen each and sold out in 10 minutes. Stock will be refilled, though.
According to Kaji, some characters who have never got their own merch are made into individual products this time.
As for souvenirs, Titan Doppelgänger Snack seems pretty interesting. The receivers get to have some fun even if they don’t visit the event themselves.
At the venue’s Carnival Game Corner, recordings of Eren, Levi, Mikasa and Erwin saying welcome can be heard. The characters whose birthday fall within the crossover period get special birthday boards set there. Crossover parfaits are available on the birthday of Sasha (26th July), Reiner (1st August) and Hange (5th September).
In this Summer, let’s share the memory of defeating titans in the Attack on Titan universe!
