Developer Mages and Team GrisGris are bringing back the Corpse Party survival horror game with a new sequel, Corpse Party II: Darkness Distortion. Though the game’s platforms remain unknown, the game is set to launch sometime in 2024 in Japan.
The reveal of Corpse Party II: Darkness Distortion coincided with the 13th anniversary of the series, with the game’s existence being hinted at since February 14, 2023. The developer also mentioned in an interview that they had been working on the game for two years at that point.
While the announcement only revealed a visual of an ominous, bleeding doll with a knife in its hand, a few staff comments were shared on the game’s new official website. The game’s scenario writer and original creator of the series Makoto Kedōin laid out the following comments:
“We’ve created a new canonical sequel to the Corpse Party story titled Corpse Party II: Darkness Distortion. Set in a new location, new horrors eagerly await you with a sinister smile on their face. We hope that this will cheer all the people who fight against this cruel and cold-hearted world we find ourselves in. We hope all our fans will keep enjoying the ever-expanding world of the series!”
Yasuhiko Nomura, the series producer at Mages added the following words: “It’s been nine long years since Corpse Party: Blood Drive. Our latest Corpse Party II: Darkness Distortion marks the beginning of a completely new original story written by Kedōin-san and work is underway. We’d like our fans to look forward to a new world of Corpse Party II that will be wildly different from Corpse 1 and the previous PC version of 2.”

Beginning as a humble dōjin software video game, Corpse Party first launched on PC-9801 being developed on the RPG Maker software version RPG Tsukūru Dante 98 and released in 1996. The game primarily concerns a group of Japanese high school students who are suddenly transported to a dilapidated schoolhouse in an alternate dimension. Trapped with a ghost that stalks the school grounds, the group must find a way to escape.
Since then, the series has gained a cult-following being continued by three separate releases, and has spawned several adaptations including manga works, an anime OVA series, drama CDs, theme park attractions, and two live-action films.
