It was the golden\u00a0age of Weekly Sh\u014dnen Jump (\u9031\u520a\u5c11\u5e74\u30b8\u30e3\u30f3\u30d7) when Hiroki Goto was appointed as the magazine’s chief editor in 1986. It was undoubtedly one of his biggest accomplishments as the mid-1980s represented the era when the magazine had its highest print-run.<\/p>\n

In the panel, named \u201cJump: at the heart of the legend, with Hiroki Goto\u201d, which was held in Japan Expo 2019 on 4th July, Goto told the tales of the manga magazine and unveiled the secrets behind the best-selling manga at the 80s, including KochiKame (\u3053\u3061\u4e80), Kinnikuman ( \u30ad\u30f3\u8089\u30de\u30f3), Dr. Slump (Dr. \u30c9\u30af\u30bf\u30fc), Fist of the North Star (\u5317\u6597\u306e\u62f3), Dragon Ball (\u30c9\u30e9\u30b4\u30f3\u30dc\u30fc\u30eb) and Saint Seiya (\u8056\u95d8\u58eb\u661f\u77e2).<\/p>\n

\u258d<\/strong><\/span>The Beginning of Everything<\/h4>\n

Goto is considered as one of the modern founders of the Weekly Sh\u00f4nen Jump, as well as one of the makers of the boom of sh\u00f4nen manga. In 1970, he joined the Japanese publishing company Shueisha in 1970, where he was appointed to the editorial department of the Weekly Sh\u00f4nen Jump straight away.<\/p>\n

\u25b2 The first issue of\u00a0 Weekly Sh\u014dnen Jump<\/b><\/h5>\n

\u201cWhen Sh\u014dnen Jump (renamed as Weekly Sh\u014dnen Jump afterward) was launched by Shueisha in 1968, it was only a magazine targeted for boys in primary school. But after making a couple of issues, we found that adults needed Sh\u014dnen manga as much as the young boys. We thus changed to publish manga that was more sophisticated,\u201d said Goto.<\/p>\n

Every Jump\u2019s fans must know the magazine\u2019s motto of creating manga: \u201cEfforts, Friendship, and Victory\u201d, even though the principle was indeed not been used in editorial at the very first beginning.<\/p>\n

Goto explained: \u201cWe only tried to create manga that everybody can enjoy. There were no specific rules. Idol and tabloid magazines dominated in the Media & Entertainment industry at that time and we aimed to stand out from the crowd by using only manga as our weapon.\u201d<\/p>\n

The magazine drew attention after issuing the manga series, Go Nagai\u2019s (\u6c38\u4e95\u6f54) Harenchi Gakuen (\u30cf\u30ec\u30f3\u30c1\u5b66\u5712) and Hiroshi Motomiya\u2019s (\u672c\u5bae\u3072\u308d\u5fd7) Otoko Ippiki Gaki Daishou (\u7537\u4e00\u5339\u30ac\u30ad\u5927\u5c06), which were known to be many adult\u2019s favorites. Harenchi Gakuen was considered as the first modern erotic manga in Japan, though no explicit sexual scene was portrayed in the series.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt opened the door for a series of taboo-shattering gag manga,\u201d said Goto, \u201cAs the manga\u00a0tells the story of an ordinary young boy, it evokes resonance among readers. It uses fun and comedian ways to talk about the sexual fantasy of teenagers like flipping girl\u2019s skirt, but without getting too erotic. Otoko Ippiki Gaki Daishou, on the other hand, talked about young gangs and man fights, which\u00a0speaks\u00a0the romance of every man. \u201d<\/p>\n

\u258d<\/strong><\/span>Experimenting the Road to Success\u00a0– the 1970s<\/h4>\n

In 1971, Weekly Sh\u014dnen Jump sold more than one million copies and ranked top in circulation among its competitors including Weekly Sh\u014dnen Magazine (\u9031\u520a\u5c11\u5e74\u30de\u30ac\u30b8\u30f3). The serialization of hit manga, such as Astro Kyudan (\u30a2\u30b9\u30c8\u30ed\u7403\u56e3), Mazinger Z (\u30de\u30b8\u30f3\u30ac\u30fcZ), Kinnikuman (\u30ad\u30f3\u8089\u30de\u30f3), Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari K\u014den Mae Hashutsujo (\u3053\u3061\u3089\u845b\u98fe\u533a\u4e80\u6709\u516c\u5712\u524d\u6d3e\u51fa\u6240), further consolidated the unbeatable position of the magazine. In 1978, the circulation of the magazine was double, with more than two million copies.<\/p>\n

\u25b2\u00a0<\/b>Osamu Akimoto’s\u00a0<\/b>Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari K\u014den Mae Hashutsujo<\/h5>\n

\u201cKochiKame (the short form of Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari K\u014den Mae Hashutsujo) is really very special.\u00a0Disregarding\u00a0the fact that it was continuously serialized in Weekly Sh\u014dnen Jump for 40 years, we never would have thought that a manga with an ojisan as the protagonist would be so popular. Ryo-san (the protagonist) should definitely take the credits. Interestingly, although he is a 36-year-old police officer, he is childish like a 12-year-old. Also, he is lazy and always hatches money-making schemes. But his flaws make him like a real person and he was thus loved by many readers.\u201d Goto said.<\/p>\n

Goto also manifested that Kinnikuman (\u30ad\u30f3\u8089\u30de\u30f3) was originally a gag manga at the beginning of the series. But the creator Yudetamago (pen name of story writer Takashi Shimada and artist Yoshinori Nakai) didn\u2019t want to be limited in this genre and decided to introduce professional wrestling skills in the manga. The series, which is originally a parody of Ultraman, was released as two one-shots in Weekly Sh\u014dnen Jump in 1978 and 1979. However, the manga was serialized in the magazine in the May 1979 issue after gaining huge popularity.<\/p>\n

\u25b2\u00a0<\/b>Yudetamago’s\u00a0Kinnikuman<\/h5>\n

\u258d<\/strong><\/span>Entering the 1980s Golden Era<\/h4>\n

As Goto mentioned, Weekly Sh\u014dnen Jump was a manga magazine targeted for young boys at the very beginning. But a breakthrough of the magazine was made after the issuing of Akira Toriyama (\u9ce5\u5c71 \u660e)\u2019s Dr. Slump (Dr. \u30b9\u30e9\u30f3\u30d7) in 1980. The series follows the humorous adventures of a girl robot, her creator and the other residents of a bizarre village.<\/p>\n

\u25b2<\/b>Akira Toriyama\u2019s Dr. Slump<\/h5>\n

The manga series had attracted a lot of female readers to the magazine, which\u00a0encourages them to read other sh\u00f4nen manga. Only eight months after its serialization, Dr. Slump was offered to be adapted into an anime television series. Goto referred it as a very rare case.<\/p>\n

\u201cGeniuses are made, not born,\u201d Goto mentioned, \u201cToriyama worked very hard for his manga. Before becoming a mangaka, he worked at an advertising agency for three years and he never felt happy about it. After quitting his previous job, he had done all kinds of part-time jobs. But as his mother required him to find a serious job to earn money, he decided to submit a work to an amateur contest in\u00a0the\u00a0Jump magazine in order to win the prize money. Even though he did not win, we spotted something different in his work and later contacted him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u25b2The fun and adorable story of<\/b>\u00a0Dr. Slump attracted\u00a0a lot of female readers to the magazine<\/h5>\n

Toriyama’s debut came later in 1978 with Wonder Island, which was also published in Weekly Sh\u014dnen Jump. However, he did not rise to popularity until Dr. Slump. It was later awarded the Shogakukan Manga Award for sh\u014dnen and sh\u014djo manga in 1981 and has sold over 35 million copies in Japan.<\/p>\n

\u25b2\u00a0<\/b>Akira Toriyama\u2019s Dragon Ball<\/h5>\n

Four years after, Toriyama came out another hit manga, Dragon Ball (\u30c9\u30e9\u30b4\u30f3\u30dc\u30fc\u30eb), which drew up the circulation of Weekly Sh\u014dnen Jump to over four million copies. The series follows the adventures of the protagonist, Son Goku, from his childhood through adulthood as he trains in martial arts and explores the world in search of the seven orbs known as the Dragon Balls, which summon a wish-granting dragon when gathered.<\/p>\n

\u25b2\u00a0<\/b>\u00a0Toriyama took his reference from Hong Kong martial arts film<\/h5>\n

\u201cAs Dr. Slump is a gag manga, Toriyama said he had used up all his funny ideas and would like to try something different. At that time, he was a huge fan of Hong Kong martial actor Jackie Chan. He thus wanted to create an action manga that is just like martial arts films. That makes the battle scene in Dragon Balls extremely real. The idea of getting immortal through collecting the seven orbs is also very novel at that time,\u201d added Goto.<\/p>\n

As Dragon Ball became one of the most successful manga in the 1980s, Weekly Sh\u014dnen Jump continued to issue a number of well-known manga, including Fist of the North Star (\u5317\u6597\u306e\u62f3), Captain Tsubasa (\u30ad\u30e3\u30d7\u30c6\u30f3\u7ffc), City Hunter (\u30b7\u30c6\u30a3\u30fc\u30cf\u30f3\u30bf\u30fc), Saint Seiya (\u8056\u95d8\u58eb\u661f\u77e2), Rokudenashi Blues (\u308d\u304f\u3067\u306a\u3057BLUES) and JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure (\u30b8\u30e7\u30b8\u30e7\u306e\u5947\u5999\u306a\u5192\u967a). It was the time when everyone in Japan held\u00a0a Weekly Shonen Jump in hands.<\/p>\n

\u258d<\/strong><\/span>The Tales Goes On<\/h4>\n

Unfortunately, the one-hour panel stopped here even though Goto-san wanted to continue his share on the development of Weekly Sh\u014dnen Jump in the 1990s onwards. Sadly, the time is just too short.<\/p>\n

In 1986, he became the magazine chief editor and remained at this position for seven and a half years. The most important print-run which he was there rose to 6.43 million copies. He\u00a0laid the foundation for the highest print-run of 6.53 million which was reached two years later. Last year marked an important year for Weekly Sh\u014dnen Jump when it celebrated its 50 anniversary.
