Isekai Shikkaku is based loosely on the 1948 novel, No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai , and considered to be his greatest masterpiece. The novel covers dark subjects, including suicide, social exclusion, and depression. The book is considered by many to be autobiographical, as Osamu Dazai himself committed double suicide several times, only to fail. The book was the last work he ever made before he took his own life.
No Longer Human has since become public domain on January 1, 2019, and has then received several adaptations including a live-action film, an anime feature film, and several manga adaptations including one by Junji Ito. Osamu Dazai has also been referenced several times in anime, such as in Bungou Stray Dogs, Aoi Bungaku’s first four episodes, and Nozomu Itoshiki from Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei is based on No Longer Human’s protagonist!
