Visiting the Real-Life Locations in Lycoris Recoil, and How You Can Too!

0

Lycoris Recoil aired its last episode on September 24, showing a heartwarming story between Chisato and Takina. Although Lycoris Recoil’s anime has come to a satisfying end, the story of the pair will still continue in the hearts of many fans and who knows maybe there will be more to come.

While watching Lycoris Recoil it’s not hard to have spotted that the show isn’t just based in modern Tokyo, it actually borrows many backgrounds and locations from the real-life area, including the incredibly famous Tokyo Skytree Tower! Many of the locations featured in the show can actually be found in Sumida City in Tokyo, home to many popular tourist attractions.

With the team lovingly recreating these locations in the show, here’s a bunch of locations from the Lycoris Recoil show fans will definitely want to visit on their next pilgrimage to Japan, which work as both spots you can pay homage to the show, but also make great tourist attractions!

Life-Sized Lycoris Recoil Life-Sized Displays!

■ Ryōgoku Tourism Bureau
For a limited time, the Sumida City Tourism Association set up a number of life-sized cutouts featuring the girls of Lycoris Recoil adjacent to several areas across Tokyo! One of these is located in the station next to the Ryōgoku Kokugikan National Sumo Arena where you can not only see tons of memorabilia and look back at Sumo’s history, but also see the life-sized portraits of Chisato, Takina, Kurumi, and Mizuki!

■ Animate Kinshichō
The Animate at Kinshichō also has life-sized displays featuring Chisato and Takina! Usually, they’ll place this outside for you to see before going in, but on the day we went it was raining so they brought them inside. The animate isn’t really advertised out in the streets, so you may have to check your map to find it!

■Olinas Kinshichō (オリナス)

The Olinas mall at Kinshichō meanwhile have cardboard displays for Mizuki and Kurumi! You can find these near two pillars by the escalator, and it’s relatively close to the park where Chisato and Takina had their little talk, but more on that later.

This spot makes a great little break area since the mall’s filled with restaurants and stalls to buy food and take a quick shopping break before continuing on your journey!

■ SHOP&WORKSHOP sumizumi (すみずみ)

At this location were Chisato and Takina waiting by the store’s entrance! Sadly when we went the store was taking a day off so we couldn’t get a picture, but the store did put take a photo and leave it on its Instagram when we went.

On the subject of these cutouts, we’re still not sure if the pop-ups will still be around by the time you get there, so if you’re ever visiting these places and can still spot the Lycoris Recoil cutouts, let us know in the comments below!

Lycoris Recoil Real-Life Locations

Now let’s go through a whole bunch of locations from the anime that we found in real life. Most of these also happen to be pretty nice tourist attractions, so they’re also great placesto go whether you just want to check out the anime spots, or secretly want to do it without letting your family and friends know how much of a fan you are!

Kinshi Park

Fans will recognize Kinshi Park as the location in episode 1, where Takina and Chisato took a detour to the park to talk and got closer to each other, and Chisato told Takina of her division’s mission then shook hands to signify their becoming partners.

Honjo Police Station

Referred to in Lycoris Recoil as Oshiage Police Station, this is the location Majima attacked in episode 7 of the show!

Police stations don’t exactly make for the best tourist destinations though, so you may just wanna snap a photo or two and leave before you run into the authorities or cause a scene. As cool as it is lets leave the authorities to their jobs!

Oshiage Station

Referred to as Kita Oshiage Station in the anime, this area is featured in episode 4 of the show and in the opening, and is also one of the hottest tourist attractions in Japan, being close to the Skytree featured in Lycoris Recoil’s anime and in real life!

Conveniently you can also get here by going through Kinshi Park and the Honjo Police station, past the Keisei Bridge towards Skytree, and following the riverbank. Past the road and make a right, and you can see the spot shown in the show’s opening!

At the B3 Exit of Oshiage station, you can also find the spot where Chisato and Takina meet up again in Episode 4! If you’re heading to Oshiage station by subway, you can just come out of Exit B3 and make a right past the road to find the area featured in the opening.

Solamachi Hiroba

Solomachi Hiroba is the shopping mall area just outside of Skytree, and you can easily find it from Exit B3 on your way toward Skytree. This is also featured in Lycoris Recoil’s opening with the shot featuring Chisato!

Tokyo Skytree

Arguably the most important location in Lycoris Recoil and the location of the infamous Radio Tower incident, the Tokyo Skytree! Once you’ve come to this location, you can’t help but feel in your heart, “I’ve finally come to this holy place from Lycoris Recoil!” This area is a famous tourist attraction that you should definitely visit even if you weren’t a huge fan of the anime, but now it has special connotations with that show!

Funnily enough, the scene when Chisato and Mika are about to enter the Skytree in episode 11, is actually based on the fourth-floor entrance to Skytree, but it’s framed as the ground floor for better continuity.

Inside the Skytree, the spot where Chisato hits the fire alarm is also a little different, as this is actually the Tokyo Skytree ticket booth.

Sumida Aquarium

The Sumida Aquarium can be accessed right next to the Skytree ticket office. Most locals here actually get an annual pass to visit the Aquarium whenever, but we only got a day pass since unfortunately, we don’t live in Japan, such a shame.

The aquarium’s filled with people at most hours of the day unlike in Lycoris Recoil, and it does take a whole lot of courage to say “Sakanaa” and “Chin’Anagooo!”. Even if you’re not up to embarrassing yourself in public the aquarium offers tons of beautiful views and loads of information on marine life, and also has a great souvenir shop with plenty of restaurants to visit on your way out!

Sumida Park Fishing Pond

Once you head out of Skytree and out towards Sumida river, you can find the Sumida Park Fishing Pond seen in episode 9. This is one of the areas Chisato and Takina mess around in Lycoris Recoil. It’s quite a walk towards this area though, and we didn’t have the time to visit it ourselves, but if you’re serious about visiting the place and maybe want to do a bit of fishing, you can do so there or just check out the views of it from nearby!

Sensō-ji Temple (Asakusa Kannon Temple)

Tokyo’s famous Asakusa Kannon, or Sensoji, and Kaminarimon featured in episode 5! This hustling and bustling area leading to the shrine has tons of stalls selling local goods, foods, with plenty of restaurants in the area, and is a nice walk away from the Skytree!

You can head here from Asakusa Station, and both Tokyo Skytree and Oshiage station can also be reached by the nearby subway. Oddly enough the anime shows loads of cars passing by here and no stalls, which is probably a side-effect of the events of the show, and something most Japanese viewers may have picked up on.

Ameyokocho

The incredibly famous Ameyokocho shopping market! This place shows up in episode 10 of Lycoris Recoil after Majima finally makes his move and broadcasts his plans across Japan. Ameyokocho is actually quite a ways away from Sumida and Skytree, so you won’t actually see it in the background in real life.

You can get to Ameyokocho from Okachimachi station when exiting out onto the main road, it’s pretty hard to miss with the huge billboards! This is a great place to go to check out some local goods including loads of cheap foods and is also a few blocks away from the Ueno Zoo, and if you’re willing to walk for a good 10 or so minutes down the main road, can easily lead you to Akihabara!

Shinjuku Station

During Majima’s broadcast, there are also three locations from Shinjuku that make a brief cameo. These can be accessed from the Southeast exit of Shinjuku station, and are pretty hard to miss as these are all large malls and buildings, that have also been the site for huge gaming and anime reveals historically, especially at Shinjuku ALTA!

Let’s go over some of these locations that you can get to, heading out of Shinjuku station’s Southeast exit!

■ Shinjuku Southeeast Exit Plaza

■ Shinjuku ALTA
Another interesting thing about Shinjuku Alta is it’s right next to the famous 3D billboard, which was used to advertise loads of anime and games with its almost incredibly fancy and realistic 3D display. This display was also used to advertise the 2nd season of Spy x Family!

■ Yunika Vision
Yunika is another large building you can easily spot from Shinjuku. This massive advertising building makes for a great landmark to help you navigate the area, while also being along the same street where you can access Kabukicho, the inspiration for Kamurocho in the Yakuza series!

Shibuya Crossing

The infamous Shibuya crossing that’s so well-known it might as well be a world heritage site. This incredibly bustling street of Shibuya is right outside of Shibuya station, leading out into the Shibuya strip area and also really close to the Shibuya 109 building. Fans of Persona 5, The World Ends with You and so many more titles will find loads to enjoy here.

Oh yeah, and it’s also featured in Lycoris Recoil in one of the cuts with Majima’s broadcast!

Atago-Jinja Shrine

A famous shrine that shows up in Episode 8 of Lycoris Recoil when Takina decides they need to make some money, and where Chisato is seen chasing after a tanuki!

There’s an old legend about this shrine where a great warrior leaped up to the top with a single bound on his horse, only for the climb down to take 45 minutes. You can even spot a mural of this tale up in the shrine!

Tokyo Station

Tokyo Station station shows up in Episode 5 of Lycoris Recoil when the client is explaining the truth behind his mission.

If you feel like you don’t have the time to make it here during the day, Tokyo Station is also lit up quite nicely at night, making it a scenic spot at any time of the day.

Ote Koraimon

Known by many names, this gate and bridge are the crossing over to Ako Castle, once home to the Asano clan, and one of Japan’s National Places of Scenic Beauty.

Unlike most locations this Lycoris Recoil, this place isn’t open at night so check the website and more details for when you can enter.

Mitsui Repark

Mitsui Reparks are actually just generic parking locations for people to leave their cars overnight or for extended periods of time. This place is featured in episode 2 when Chisato and Takina prepare to switch cars, and Chisato really wants to drive a “Supercarrrr”! Which is actually a red Lexus LFA, very stylish.

People found this spot pretty quickly online from just the little snippets you get from Lycoris Recoil, you can find it too East of the Adachi ward, a little ways off from Downtown Tokyo.

Ōjima-Komatsugawa Park

The spot where Chisato and Majima fight for the first time on-screen in Episode 6. The location’s not that obvious since it’s incredibly dark in the scene, but you can spot some of the landmarks in the background of the scene that give it away.

It’s pretty far from Kinshi-cho and is one of the few spots that’s pretty far from Sumida, so you might not want to dedicate part of your trip just going to it, though If you have plenty of time on your hands it’s a nice and relaxing spot to visit on another day.

lycoreco 6 1

Sakuragaoka Park

The final location where Chisato and Takina say their goodbyes in Episode 9. The hill featured in the episode is actually in Sakuragaoka Park in Tama city. This place is very far from the rest of the locations but it makes for an excellent view at night and especially in spring when the Cherry Blossoms bloom.

If you’re ever in the city check this place out whether in the day or at night and you’ll be whisked away to one of the best views in the city just like what Chisato and Takina experienced. Even better on a snowy day.

lycoreco 9 2

Okinawa Miyakojima Blue Turtle

And finally, we have one of the last places featured in Lycoris Recoil, the Blue Turtle restaurant, the place Chisato worked at in the final episode and it’s an actual place in Okinawa!

This spectacularly picturesque and beautiful restaurant just off the road in Miyakojima is sitting next to stunning beaches with beautiful blue waters and an incredible view of the ocean. You’re probably not going to visit Okinawa while you’re in Tokyo since it’s another flight off, but if you’re ever planning on visiting Japan’s own beach island, definitely give this place a try!

With all these beautiful locations we’ve covered here, would you be planning your trip to these spots? It’s even better know that you know that these locations also double as tourist spots, making it a great place to go even with friends and family that haven’t seen Lycoris Recoil yet!
