Originally released on PlayStation, the game was later ported to Sega Saturn and Microsoft Windows, and finally bundled with Atelier Elie for Sega Dreamcast and then PlayStation 2. The game was never released outside Japan.
The story follows Marie, a 19-year-old alchemy student in Salburg, a medieval-style town. She is the worst student in her class and is in danger of expulsion. Her teacher, Ingrid, offers her a chance to save herself, and Marie is then given her own workshop, an Atelier, where she is given five years to produce something remarkable.
