Falcom recently unveiled some more information regarding Ys X Nordics, this time regarding four more characters and the game’s key gameplay mechanic, Mana Actions.
The characters introduced were none other than returning favorite Dogi voiced by Kenta Miyake. Falcom also introduced three new characters, which are Glen Berge voiced by Yuusuke Kobayashi, Cruz Carpent voiced by Yūya Hirose, and Rosalind Lasveli voiced by Yoshino Aoyama.
The developers also went into the Ys X Nordics’ new main traversal feature Mana actions, which can be used to swing across certain areas using Mana as a kind of rope or to pull objects. You can also perform Mana Rides, creating a ridable hoverboard that glides over water and air, and Mana burst, a system that lets you wield fire and ice to attack enemies or create new paths.
Ys X Nordics launches in 2023 in Japan for the PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch.
▍Ys X Nordics New Characters
■ Dogi – CV: Kenta Miyake
The lovable big man is back. This recurring character and Adol Christin’s long-time companion makes a return in Ys X Nordics, with the game taking place before Ys Seven when he was playable, Dogi now appears as a 23-year-old.
After adventuring in the ancient kingdom of Ys Dogi chose to leave behind a life of crime and find a more meaningful (and legal) way of making a living. Despite what he’s been through his bond with Adol is still solid, and continues to look out for him.
■ Glen Berge – CV: Yuusuke Kobayashi
Glen is an 18-year-old young man and part of the vigilante corps in Carnack, a coast town and one of the new areas Adol and the player visits in their adventure. Always outgoing and positive, he sometimes goes off on a bit of a tangent, but despite how casual his words may seem he’ll always get to the heart of the matter and is admired by his peers.
■ Rosalind Lazveli – CV: Yoshino Aoyama
Lasveli Inn Tavern’s golden girl and the town jewel. Also known more commonly as Rosa, she constantly worries about Adol as a young man who’s traveling the world even their they’re about the same age at 16. Because of her kind demeanor many of the tavern’s patrons claim her temperant’s better than her own parents, and because of that she’s made friends with many around her age, including Glen and Cruz.
■ Cruz Carpent – CV: Yuya Hirose
Heir to the Carpent Trading Company that thrives in Carnack. He grew up in an affluent family and loves to read, with a curiosity for everything that leads him to want to learn about everything in the world. Despite how stoic and mature he looks, he’s known to take initiative and even caused quite a stir when he got caught trying to be a stowaway aboard a Romund Empire’s Merchant ship.
▍Ys X Nordics Mana Actions
One of Ys X Nordic’s key actions is the inclusion of Mana actions, specific interactions with the environment you can perform by converting mana into useful tools, and for combat.
■ Mana String
Convert energy into a string that can be used to propel Adol across large gaps, raise himself over heights, or be used as a rope to pull objects much larger than himself. As you progress through Ys X Nordics your Mana String will become stronger, letting you pull even larger objects and even flip switches in dungeons.
■ Mana Ride
You can also conjure a Grimble Board that will guide you across the floor letting you travel long distances, such as over water, or along wind paths.
You can also run into spots like windpools, which act similarly to booster pads in other games, propelling you forward as you launch into the air, making traversal much quicker, and letting you reach longer gaps that you wouldn’t be able to reach by just jumping. As you progress through Ys X Nordics the Grimble board will also get faster, letting you glide up strong water currents, and even be able to accelerate and stop.
■ Mana Burst
Convert your mana into a powerful fire attack for Adol, and an ice attack for Carja! These abilities let you burn a path or freeze waterways to create new walkable paths, opening up dungeon areas even more, while also letting you dish out pain to surrounding enemies.
