Alliance Arts and developer Unknown X announced that the rhythm game Touhou Danmaku Kagura: Phantasia Lost will launch worldwide for PC via Steam on February 8, 2024. The announcement also unveiled the game’s first collaboration song, “U.N. Owen Was Hero?” which is composed by Toby Fox, creator of Undertale, and Zun, creator of Touhou Project, planned as free downloadable content. A Nintendo Switch version of the game is also in the works, however, a release date has not yet been announced.
The game, a standalone rebuild of the smartphone rhythm game Touhou Danmaku Kagura, continues the beloved rhythm setting. This time, players will find themselves in the now barren Phantasia, and embark on a journey to collect Mitama cards, or Fragments of Memories. The plot also sees the protagonist, Reimu, and her friend Marisa on their respective quests to restore Phantasia and find each other.
Touhou Danmaku Kagura: Phantasia Lost will have two editions: a Standard Edition and a Deluxe Edition. The Standard Edition will feature 68 songs, including the original Touhou music. The Deluxe Edition will include all features of the Standard Edition, plus all four planned DLC music packs, and an original soundtrack, which will introduce new music and the game’s background scores. These DLCs, totaling 102 scores, will be released in phases following the game’s release.

▍About Touhou Danmaku Kagura: Phantasia Lost
Touhou Danmaku Kagura: Phantasia Lost, is a rhythm game rooted in the Touhou Project universe, set in the now barren land of Phantasia, which has lost everything: thoughts, memories, and many more. This game is a standalone rebuild of the first officially approved smartphone rhythm game, Touhou Danmaku Kagura.
The game features songs from the original game, Mitama Cards that unlock characters illustrated by creators like Yuu Kamiya and Negi Haruba, and a new story mode penned by Jin Fujisawa and Wakano Takeda of Story Note Co.
The objective of the game revolves around playing Danmaku Kagura and collecting the Mitama Cards, or Fragments of Memories. These hold the key to rebuilding the desolated Phantasia. Offering two distinct rhythm game experiences, Kagura Stage and Danmaku Stage, the game brings both traditional and new gameplay elements.
In Kagura Stage, the player is challenged to hit the notes at the right moment, stacking up combos to achieve high scores. This mode boasts over 160 arranged Touhou music playable across four different difficulties, including tunes from the game’s paid downloadable content.
The Danmaku Stage offers a blend of shoot ’em up and rhythm games. Players rhythmically hit notes on the sides to inflict damage on the bosses, completing missions for each stage.
The game offers a vast array of music, including 68 original Touhou songs, with plans to release four DLC music packs adding a total of 102 additional scores.
In the game’s story, the main character, Reimu embarks on an unending journey to collect the Fragments of Memories to restore Phantasia. At the same time, Marisa begins her quest to locate Reimu. This plot builds upon the original game, which launched in August 2021 and ended service in October 2022.
