Doujinshi – Dōjinshi 同人誌

QooPedia

Dōjinshi, many of you ACG fans may know this term as fan-made manga featuring characters from existing series, but is that all there is to the Dōjinshi?

The Dōjin (同人) in Dōjinshishi translate to “same person” in English, the meaning is used to refer to people or a person with the same goal or interest. The Shi in Dōjinshi (誌) means publication.

Originally, Dōjinshi was used to refer to self-published works that were shared among close circles of young creative authors in the Shōwa period. During the 80’s, a shift occurred in the Dōjinshi trends, a transition from original content to the Dōjinshi we see today, original plots featuring characters from existing series.

In the past couple decades, the Dōjinshi market has expanded exponentially and in 2012 the Dōjin Mark was created as a solution to legalize certain fan works. The rise of Dōjinshi culture has lead to increased popularity of Comiket, the iconic convention dedicated to Dōjinshi.

Stereotypically, Dōjinshi has given the impression that the market is filled with smut and hentai. Whilst, it is true that smut and hentai titles are popular, the Dōjinshi market is also filled with touching stories created by fans who want certain CPs to be together. Ture to its origin, Dōjinshi are made by an individual for a small group of people with the same interest, sometimes that would feature a smut/hentai nature and sometimes it doesn’t.
