SEGA has announced the next mainline Sonic game, Sonic Frontiers, which is set to release on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC in winter 2022.
Dveloped by Sega’s Sonic Team Japan with leadership from producer Sachiko Kawamura and director Morio Kishimoto, this new game promises an “open-zone-inspired experience”. The title also features an original storyline from Sonic Boom writer Ian Flynn.
According to Takashi Iizuka, creative officer at Sonic Team USA, “Sonic Frontiers is a huge leap forward for the franchise, delivering an evolved gameplay experience that can be enjoyed by longtime Sonic fans and action-adventure enthusiasts alike.”
It seems that players can explore lush and expansive landscapes with Sonic’s signature speed and abilities. A new trailer has also been revealed during today’s The Game Awards 2021, showcasing Sonic running past a vast, open-zone realm, filled with grass, flowers, and ruins.
